In the
September 2007 issue:
Building and maintaining a
strong route throughout New England for over 30 years, Billy Burr’s
FUN-O-RAMA was a traditional carnival. Fielding over twenty-five rides and
attractions, the show’s strong foundation continues today as Rockwell
Amusements.
Casting all of the colors
of the rainbow on the midways they set up is Rainbow Valley Rides of
Wisconsin. The show offers as much variety of color as the rainbow with the
rides and attractions they offer, including the Freak Out, Sky Master, and
Ali Baba.
When Lavoy and Mildred
Winton purchased the Cumberland Valley Shows from his parents, little did
the industry realize the importance of that act. During the course of their
ownership, Lavoy was credited with seven U.S. patents that benefited the
industry.
Buffalo, New York takes
advantage of a somewhat abbreviated carnival season, and Mike Robb’s Fun
City Shows makes sure that they turn the city into just that – Fun City. The
family owned and operated carnival plays a number of local festivals in the
city as soon as there is a slight thaw in the brutal winter weather.
Manufacturer’s Showcase
puts the spotlight on a new line of luxury travel trailers that are also
relatively inexpensive by Forks RV; on new frozen entrees for food
concessionaires to help increase menu variety and the bottom line; and on a
popcorn popper from Gold Medal that addresses the problems of inadequate
power supply and ease of transport.
Billy Clark has spent more
that 50 years on the road. He and his wife Sue own and operate Smokey
Mountain Amusements and one of the pieces in his ride stable is a Spider
that once belonged to Rod Link, Link Shows.
Bobby Jenks, who frequently
books with Smokey Mountain Amusements, has acquired a 1916 Wurlitzer Band
Organ that he has had restored and it now is traveling to fairs and events,
once again bringing happy music to all who listen.
Do you remember a Himalaya
ride made by Reverchon called the Overland Express? The piece was built for
United Shows of America and was recently refurbished by current owner Miller
Spectacular Shows.
Ed and Donna Inners have
managed to combine new and classic pieces to form a carnival, Inners Shows,
that has also managed to carve its niche in providing the midway at county
fairs, church festivals and local celebrations.
Earlier this year, the
carnival industry lost another member with the passing of independent
operator Dwayne Steck. His wife, Beverly, shares some memories of her
hardworking husband and the ride operation they built and operated for many
years.
Route Snapshots takes a
